L’Avventura ( 1960 )

I saw one of the films that had been a long time on my list of films-to-see: Michelangelo Antonioni’sL’AVVENTURA” (1960) a film which, in its almost two hours and a half of length, left me wondering and thinking about many things.


The greatness of this film to me is what it provoked in me in terms of unexplained sensa-tions.


The film revolves around a group of mostly privileged, rich, idle people, who are traveling on a board of a yacht to a group of volcanic islands ( Lisca Bianca ) near Sicily.


Lea Massari plays the beautiful daughter ( Anna ) of a rich magnate, who is having certain existential issues in her relationship with her lover Sandro ( played Gabriele Ferzetti ). Also on board the yacht is her close friend Claudia ( played by the mysteriously alluring Monica Vitti in her prime ). Some of the characters are played by real blue-blooded Italian people like Esmeralda Ruspoli and Angela Tommasi di Lampedusa.


The whole sequence after the sudden and mysterious disappearance of Anna is instilled with an atmosphere of restlessness and of the supernatural; of human beings against the elements of nature; of unexpectedness.


In the unfolding of the events that take place in the film, there’s no devolepment of the characters’ motives, feelings or reasons. They come across as spoiled, shallow, childish, leading empty lives and looking or longing for something that they do not know what it is. And I think that Antonioni did this on purpose to show us the worthlessness of these people and the futility of their lives.


L'AVVENTURA ( XII )The important aspects of this film, in my opinion, is the glorious cinematography of Aldo Scavarda, the depiction of the people in the background of the story; of the amazing landscapes; the elements of nature; of human reactions. i.e. the reaction of the hoards of men towards Claudia’s presence on the street of a small town and towards a beautiful prostitute that later becomes involved with Sandro has an uncanny quality that reminded me of Sebastian Venable being stalked and pursued by hoards of young men in “Suddenly Last Summer” (1959).


A very interesting and different kind of film.
