FERNANDO’s CORNER ~ Posted April 11th, 2016
Watched this surprisingly good Pre Code, “The False Madonna’”(1931) directeed by Stuart Walker, with a winning Kay Francis performance, who plays a con artist who gets involved in a scheme to deceive a young blind lad in order to make him believe that she is his long estranged mother.
Francis’ talent, luminosity and sincere performance make this film rise above average, as does John Breeden’s effective performance as the doomed young man. Marjorie Gateson is superb as another con woman and it’s rewarding to see Silent actor Conway Tearle co-starring as the young boy’s tutor. William “Stage” Boyd is also good as Francis’ partner in crime. Very good story of redemption.
