WELL YOU’VE COME TO  THE RIGHT PLACE. 

I think for us classic film fans there are seminal milestone years for classic motion pictures: 1947 for Film Noir, 1939 for The Golden Age and 1932. Now I don’t know if there’s any thing officially official about it, but for me, 1932 is the heart and creme de la creme of Pre-Code. Feel free to disagree with me ( ...on your own blog. )

HOT & BOTHERED BLOGATHON ~ ( Shanghai Express )

1932 had no idea it would be in the middle of what’s now known as the Pre-Code era ( 1930 – 1934 ). Or that Joseph Breen would put his foot down on what Will Hays started. I have a feeling if we had kept cinema on the path of lingerie, pre-marital sex and just wild and crazy and frank times, ( thereby giving the genre a different name since there’d be no ‘pre’ or ‘post’ anything ) America might’ve been a better place for it. We wouldn’t be an uptight and Puritanical country. We think we’re not, but we are. We wouldn’t have needed the 60’s to sexually revolutionize us. Other countries wouldn’t shake their heads in astonishment at how we fear sex but love violence. Sex would be just a matter-of-fact fact of life.

To celebrate one of the seminal years of pre-code, we are presenting our “HOT & BOTHERED: FILMS OF 1932 BLOGATHON.” And I can’t tell you how proud and happy I am to be co-hosting this blogathon with blogger Aurora of ONCE UPON A SCREEN. You all know her. She’s a vet in these parts, whose blog I’ve enjoyed. We both look forward to reading your entries and linking the world-at-large to your posts. We’ve got banners for you to use with your posts including the one above. There are just a couple of guidelines for you:

  • No duplicates or re-prints of past posts. 1932 was a pretty big year for
    movies as you can see from this list. My post will be on “Trouble in Paradise”
    and Aurora will write about “Island of Lost Souls.”
  • You can submit your film of choice here in my Comments sections below, or
    over at Aurora’s blog. First come, first serve. You might consider a first and second choice of film, just in case your first choice is taken by another blogger.
  • Please include your blog’s NAME and URL along with your film of choice.
  • Aurora and I will take turns hosting our blogathon. When you’re actually ready
    to post, Aurora will cover posts submitted Saturday July 9th and I will cover
    posts received Sunday July 10th.
  • Help us spread the word by including one of the event banners on your blog and your submission. Yeah, I designed all these banners…but guess who came up with the pithy title “Hot & Bothered”? That’s right…from the mind of Aurora.
  • How can you NOT have fun. It’s pre-code. It’s 1932!!!

      • Okay, I pick “Call Her Savage.” I think Clara Bow needs some love, especially since this was her second to last film before she retired at the elderly age of 27! To be honest, I haven’t seen “Smilin’ Through” yet but was attracted to it because it features one of the first screen appearances by our Cora Sue Collins!

Let us know how it is when you write about her in “Call Me Savage.” I’m putting you down for it. I LOVE “Smilin’ Through” and now that I’ve discovered Cora Sue Collins…I’m all about Cora Sue Collins. I’m wishing her all kinds of good health. I want to see her featured at 2017’s TCM Film Festival…and the only one to do a great interview with her would be writer Cari Beauchamp.   24. Just posted similar on Aurora’s site. All my first thoughts were taken, but I think I got it, Betty Boop shorts. As a character Betty Boop first appeared in various Fleischer Studios, Talkartoons in 1930 and 1931. In the early cartoons Betty was drawn as a cartoon dog. It wasn’t until 1932 that Betty Boop first appeared in her final form as a human. By 1932, she was starring in Talkarktoons and was given her own series of cartoons later that year. The idea is to cover several cartoons from 1932, depending on what I can find. I will definitely cover, Minnie the Moocher where she stars opposite an animated Cab Calloway.

      • Yeah, I know, and to make things worse The Roosevelt closed their bars at midnight on Sunday. You’d think with the prices they were charging, they’d want to charge those prices a bit longer. Ariel, Paula, and I went to a bar down by the Egyptian. Drinks were about a third the price of what they were at The Roosevelt. I’m thinking of starting a campaign to do our drinking somewhere else next year, #TCMFFDrinkElsewhere2017 Either that or I need to up my game on the Vip.

      • OOOH…DON’T do anymore with the VIP. Two was enough for me. Did you go to Boardner’s? Yes, the Roosevelt is convenient, but the prices were cheaper at Boardner’s. You start your campaign and I will join the fight at #TCMFFDRINKELSEWHERE2017. I will say this, after 7:00pm, the crowd changes. So if you want it nice ‘n mellow, early is the thing. If you want to bump into the 20/30-something crowd, that’s another story. Hey for me, Grey Goose is Grey Goose no matter WHO is around me.

        Now…get those Betty Boops!

      • Yes, we did go to Boardners, kind of a hole in the wall, but they were showing bad movies on the big screens. Plus, the place was almost empty on a Sunday night so you could hear yourself talk. The prices don’t bother me so much. Okay, they do, but not as much as the shutting down early. The problem with earlier is I’m always in a theater.

        I ordered Betty Boop on Blu-Ray last night. I have some DVDs with a bunch of Betty Boop cartoons, but all but one or two cartoons were mid- to late-30s. The Blu-Rays are almost all Pre-Code. If they are anything like the Fleischer Popeye DVDs from several years ago, it’ll be well worth it.
